Bumrungrad International Hospital (Thai: โรงพยาบาลบำรุงราษฎร์, [roːŋpʰájaːbaːn bamruŋrâːt], bahm-roong-RAHT; SETBH) is a multiple-specialty medical center located in Bangkok, Thailand. More frequently referred to as Bumrungrad Hospital or simply Bumrungrad, its name, "Bumrungrad" means "care for the people".

History

Bumrungrad International Hospital was established as a 200-bed facility in September 1980 with an investment of 90 million Thai baht.[3] Bumrungrad is Southeast Asia’s largest private medical center.[4] As a regional referral center for specialty medicine, it is one of the world’s popular medical tourism destinations.[5][6] The majority shareholders in the hospital are Bangkok Bank PCL (Thailand’s largest bank) and the Sophonpanich family, one of Thailand’s leading business families.[3][7]

Management

Bumrungrad International is managed by a team of experienced hospital administrators from the United States, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.[8] The hospital’s medical chairman is board certified in the UK, and its group medical director is board certified in the US. Other top medical officers were trained in the US or UK, or held positions at one of Thailand’s top teaching hospitals. A large proportion of the medical staff has international experience, and many possess board certification from the UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, or the US (210 are board-certified in the US).[9][10]

Accreditations, Awards & Recognition

Bumrungrad has international healthcare accreditation from the American private company Joint Commission International. However, up to 2008 the hospital had not as yet expanded its accreditation portfolio to take in other accreditation schemes representative of parts of the world outside of the US, such as Australia and Europe and the United Kingdom. Instead, Bumrungrad has continuously improved its service quality and accomplished the Thailand Quality Class Recognition Award in 2008. This Thailand Award is equivalent to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) in US.

[18][19]

Site & Medical Services

The hospital is located in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. Bumrungrad is a "one-stop" center for medical services[10][12][22] – especially for surgery procedures,[22] and features 554 beds, 33 specialty centers, and more than 1,000 doctors representing virtually all specialties and sub-specialties of medicine. Dental, general and specialty medicine, advanced diagnostics and therapeutics, surgical services, intensive care, and rehabilitation are available in these modern and efficient medical facilities.[2][6]

Foreigners using Bumrungrad facilities are warned that they loose all their rights at international law, as the hospital rigidly insists any complaints are only submitted in Thailand under Thai laws. ( ref: www.bumrungrad.com/en/hospital-faq q.4. )

The United States Peace Corps uses Bumrungrad as one of their main hospitals to send Peace Corps Volunteers for medical procedures. It is also used as the hospital for Peace Corps Volunteers medical evacuations in the Europe, Mediterranean, and Asia (EMA) region.

Medical Centers

The hospital treats over 1.2 million patients annually[23][24] for medical services ranging from comprehensive check ups to cardiac surgery. The Australian newspapers[12][25] report that the hospital builds the reputation for high-quality, international-standard medical services, immediate access to those services and specialists, and affordable prices. The hospital has a lobby said to be reminiscent of a five-star hotel[6][26] providing concierge-style services and an electronic medical-records system that reduce paper and waiting.[25]

Medical Tourism

Bumrungrad International Hospital is regularly featured in the world press as a leading medical tourism destination.[27] According to www.firstmedicaltourism.com,[28] the hospital, in 2008, served 430,000 international patients from over 190 countries seeking high quality, International standard services, and lower cost healthcare.[26]

Bumrungrad has 21 representative offices in different countries.[26][29] The hospital has a complete support service infrastructure to manage inbound patients, including partnerships with leading inbound and outbound travel and tour operators.[12][25][30]

Referral Offices

Health Information Management

The hospital manages patient information utilizing an integrated hospital information system that uses electronic medical records and digital radiology systems. A case study by Intel Corporation revealed that Bumrungrad commissioned the development of a custom total hospital information system to service both the front office and back office in 1999.[23]

The system is a key to achieving rapid scheduling of services and efficient use of resources as reported in articles that by adapting the hospital information system, the hospital eliminates paper and waiting time.[25][31] The system also helps the potential outbreak of viruses and other disease by eliminating the constant handling of records by human hands.[32] The addition of “robotic” technology maximizes both safety and efficiency. Utilizing a Swisslog system,[33] medications selected and delivered in a way that drastically reduces the potential for medication errors.

Global Care Solutions (GCS) became one of the hospital's IT partners which has improved and maintained this integrated total hospital information system, called Hospital 2000. In January 2008, GCS was acquired by Microsoft's Health Solutions Group.[34][35][36] The system was renamed Amalga HIS in 2008.

International Operations

A subsidiary, Bumrungrad International Ltd. (BIL), was established in 2005 to focus on the acquisition, development and management of hospitals and healthcare delivery operations throughout Asia and the Middle East. The company partnered with such key international investors[37] as Bangkok Bank, Singapore-based Temasek Holdings, Hong Kong listed Asia Financial Holdings Ltd., and Istithmar World.

Initially, BIL had operational responsibility for Asian Hospital and Medical Center, a 250-bed Tertiary care facility located in south Metro Manila, Philippines. By early 2006, the company had entered into a joint venture to build and operate Bumrungrad Hospital Dubai (BHD).,[38] however this project has been canceled . BIL went on to sign an agreement in 2007 with Healthcare Authority – Abu Dhabi to manage the Al Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi City.[39] In 2008, BIL ventured outside of the core Bumrungrad business of hospital operations when it completed the acquisition of Singapore-based Asia Renal Care Ltd., a kidney dialysis provider with numerous clinics throughout Asia, including Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines.
